Hawke’s Bay Tourism measured their GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions with MyImprint for the third year in a row and have a bold goal to lead the way in sustainability in their region and achieve Carbon Zero.
Hawke’s Bay Tourism is part of the ‘Tourism Sustainability Commitment’ which is a programme to enable individual tourism businesses to contribute to leading the world in sustainable tourism.
MyImprint’s Approach to Hawke’s Bay Tourism’s Emissions
To ensure a robust and transparent assessment, we align to the globally recognised ISO 14064-1:2018 and GHG Protocol Standards.
Here are some highlights from the measuring process:
Changing Landscape: Over the past three years, Hawke’s Bay Tourism circumstances have changed significantly. Their first assessment took place post-COVID, during a period of low travel and minimal events compared to this year when we saw a return to normal travel patterns and an increase in the number and size of events, therefore emissions have risen.
PHEV Purchase: Purchase of a PHEV has led to a notable reduction in Scope 1 emissions from fuel use.
Accounting for Event Emissions: With an increase in events post-COVID, we included emissions generated by these activities, such as energy use, travel, and waste, to provide a comprehensive picture of their impact.
Assessing Purchased Goods and Services: Essential to Scope 3 reporting, we accounted for emissions associated with goods and services used in the business’ operations, including marketing materials and event supplies.
Next Steps for Hawke’s Bay Tourism
By measuring their GHG emissions for three years in a row, Hawke’s Bay Tourism has established a solid baseline from which they can track progress. The next steps include sourcing from sustainable suppliers to drive further progress. We have suggested to focus on engaging suppliers on sustainability practices and strengthen relationships with stakeholders and visitors who value environmentally responsible organisations.
This effort positions Hawke’s Bay Tourism as a leader in sustainable practices, helping them attract environmentally conscious tourists and align with the region’s broader sustainability goals.
Unique Position
From our point of view, Hawke’s Bay Tourism holds a unique position as a catalyst for change within the tourism sector. As leaders in the region, they have the potential to not only set an example through their own sustainability efforts but also to empower their members to follow suit.
This leadership role positions Hawke’s Bay Tourism as a key player in shaping a greener, more resilient future for the industry.
